no cigar
I just did a tourist show at the Improv. The emcee asked what he should say to introduce me -- generally one gives a sentence or two, or if one has no particular merits to extol, one says something like "Eh, clubs and colleges," which transmutes to "Jennifer Dziura is a very funny comic; she performs at clubs and colleges all over the country!"In this case, I said "I can be seen on VH-1's Crushed Out in the fall and at jen is famous dot com." Cool, said the emcee, and repeated it back to me.
He walked up on stage and said "Our next comic can be seen on Crashed Out and at jen is funny dot com."
Alas.
This was also my first real show with kids in the audience. Strangely, they don't laugh at gangbang jokes!
Little weirdos.

Good luck at your show at NYCC tommorrow night. Thanks for responding to my question. They messed up my intro at the NYCC. I'm thinking of just telling them as introducing me as "some dude off the street," so they don't have to worry about pronouncing my last name again. Break a leg.-Doug
I have a written intro that plugs my website Brain Champagne dot com. I read it to the MC then hand them a piece of paper with all the info written on it.
Half the time they say Brian Champagne.
My name is not Brian.
But I recommend a piece of paper. MCs seem to appreciate it-- it's something to fall back on and read if they forget what you just told them. And having MC'ed before, I can say that even remembering a small amount of information is a lot when you have many other responsibilities.
I also recommend having a joke ready for MCs who goof up your intro.
Hey Doug,
I have to say, if nobody can pronounce your name, I don't think it matters, since the audience isn't going to remember it anyway. You might think about a stage name. Not something cheesy ("Madman Doug the Doggystyle Firecracker!"), but even just a last intial (like Ali G.), or dropping a last name and using a middle name, etc. I don't know your last name so I can't make suggestions, but if no one can deal with your last name, I think you should use that as a clue. I let people introduce me as "Jenisfamous." It's fine by me.
Hey Jen. Just finished watching "Alphabet City." Great film, kind of got it right what the East Village looked like in the early 80's. Anyway i appreciate the advice and i like shaun eli's suggestion of spelling it out on paper. Your right at 11:45pm at a showcase noone cares anyway but the MC made such a deal of it that it through me a bit. I'm still a noob and searching for my voice so to speak but i won't compromise my name(hope that doesn't sound...elitist?)... I view my persona on stage as an extension of who i really am therefore its important to me to keep my name. Its just a regular italian last name and the MC was from South Dakota so no big deal...looking foward to checking out your future blog observations...if you have time check out mine at pariahcarey.blogspot.com...ok, hope i haven't OD on this topic...peace...
Good luck, Brian!
