No, I mean my Mom REALLY likes panda bears

With a great debt of gratitude to my mother for giving me permission to post this:

This is what it's like visiting the Dziura household for Christmas. Oh, and also we drink the blood of Christian children, but that's not in the video (just pandas).

I would point out that being stupid, slow, and overly specialized are assets for human babies, and that these same qualities are encouraging people to preserve pandas today.

She did receive some panda pajamas for Christmas! But I've refrained from giving her, say, an appliqued sweatshirt ... the horror!

hoverfrog said...: Jen, infants of all species are generally weak and ineffectual compared with adults of the same species. It is fortunate that successful adults grow out of these traits in order to survive. Pandas seem to be the sole exception to this rule in that they retain all the useless traits of their infant stages while only gaining mass.

People like to preserve pandas because the panda is no threat to humanity and they feel guilty because of the damage that done to nature. Pandas have come to embody a cute and cuddly life raft for humanity's mistakes. One that can be supported to alleviate that guilt.

I suspect that there is also some secret marketing tool of the Chinese involved here to encourage people to feel sympathy with the nation. Sympathy in a consumer society equates to the purchase of more goods. The Chinese are very clever like that. One could almost call them cunning.

You Americans could try the same tactic but you get lumbered with an American bald eagle. Eagles aren't creatures that encourage sympathy. If they spot weakness they'll have your eye out or carry one of those new born infants off for lunch. Vicious bastards! I mean eagles, not Americans...at least not in general.

Interestingly enough New York gets beaver. That should be the state motto. "New York gets beaver".

I'm glad you liked the "Gay as a handbag full of rainbows" statement. It's been a favourite of mine for some time. I feel that it both conveys the stereotypical idea of homosexuality while stopping short of an actual insult.; 9:08 AM
